1. Directions to Campus: The following link will take you to a map and driving directions to campus.
2. Parking and Campus Map: Here is the link to UNCA's on-line campus map http://www.unca.edu/campusmap/ Buses should park in lot 7B and cars in lot 7A. Coaches should check in at the first floor lobby of Robinson Hall. For the veteran coaches, this is the same building that we used last year.
3. Registration is from 8:00 – 9:00, and the registration table is on the first floor lobby of Robinson. (If you climb the giant stairwell in front of the Zeis science building and bear left, you will see the entrance to the first floor of Robinson.) There will be coffee and doughnuts available for coaches and other volunteers near the registration table. If you arrive before 8:00, your homeroom classrooms may not be open yet and the registration team may not be ready to serve you.
4. Homerooms: Every team has been assigned a classroom that you may use as a home base during the day. I will send homeroom assignments next week. Many teams meet in their homeroom for lunch. Unfortunately, we cannot issue keys to classroom doors. If your team members want to leave some of their stuff in your homeroom during the day, then you might want to let a couple of parents take turns guarding the goods.
5. Lunch: You may have noticed that there is a lunch period offered this year from 11:30- 12:30. In past years, many teams have opted to bring their own lunches and meet in their homeroom classrooms for lunch. Some teams send a parent or two to pick up food at one of several fast food restaurants on nearby Merrimon Avenue. You may also eat at the UNCA cafeteria. Lunch at the cafeteria costs $7.00 and is "all you can eat". (Warning: If all Science Olympiad participants report to the cafeteria at exactly 11:35, then the line will be quite long.)
6. Impounding: The only events that require impounding this year are listed below. Students should take their cars, cookies, junkyard boxes, mission possible devices, and "trajectors" to the rooms where these events take place. See the attached schedule. The impounding period is from 8:15 to 9:00.
Division B: Battery Buggy, Trajectory, Food Science and Junkyard Challenge
Division C: Mousetrap Vehicle, Trajectory, Mission Possible, and Food Science
7. Awards Ceremony: We plan to start the awards ceremony at 3:15 in Humanities Lecture Hall and hope to be finished by 4:30. Occasionally the grading of one or more events takes longer than usual. We cannot award team trophies until all scores have been submitted.
8. Watch for more e-mails & check the website: I will send the homeroom list the week before the tournament. Meanwhile, be sure to check the NC Science Olympiad website for event clarifications. Jason Painter, our fearless state director, updates this site after each regional tournament. One of the advantages of having our tournament in late March is that we get to benefit from the mistakes others have made before us. These clarifications can be found under the "Event Resources" link.
Thanks for all that you do! Please send us your questions.
