Rule 5 b. i. now states: Metal may be used in the flapping mechanism, wing hinges, motor hooks, and to attach the motor stick to the tail.
Description:
This is a building event. Teams will design and build ahead of time up to 2 rubber-powered mechanical flying birds (ornithopters) which are propelled solely by flapping wings. At the competition teams will be allowed 8 minutes to launch 2 official flights. Any setup and adjustments are included in this 8 minutes. Teams must also create a flight log with recorded data for their bird which they must present at competition. See the official rules for more detailed information.
Materials:
Teams MUST bring their bird(s) and flight log. Teams may also bring any tools required to calibrate their bird(s).
Event Leaders will provide all materials and tools necessary to inspect and test the birds, and the official scoresheet.
Scoring:
High score wins, using the better of 2 possible flights. 1 point is given for every second aloft, deductions are taken for rule violations as outlined in the official rules.
Common Mistakes:
In 2009 a great number of teams came to competition with wings covered in mylar. This was not allowed under 2009 rules. Be careful to use legal materials for the 2010 tournament!
New for this year, there are weight restrictions on the bird and motor. Be careful!
Plastic materials may not be used for the connecting rods, motor hooks or tail boom. Read the rules carefully!
