National Event Page: Scrambler
Clarifications:

If any part of the egg transport including the egg becomes separated during the run, a run penalty will be assessed. (Does not apply to launcher if launcher is separate from transport)

Rule 3. c. should read as follows: The egg transport must have a rigidly attached egg mount with a vertical backstop that is rigid and unpadded with a flat surface at least 5.0 cm x 5.0 cm and at least 1.5 cm thick. The horizontal portion of the egg mount which the egg rests upon must be rigid and unpadded, but no minimum dimensions are given so long as it meets requirements of rule 3.d.

**exception to rule 3.c. If a team wishes to be nationally competitive, they will not be penalized in NC for removing the backstop. In this case, the dimensions given will apply to the horizontal portion of the egg mount.

Rule 3.d. should read as follows: An uncooked, grade A large chicken egg must be mounted with the 'pointed' end of the egg 5.0-15.0 cm above the floor, pointing toward the barrier, and extending at least 2.0 cm in front of the foremost part of the transport including the egg mount. Tape will be provided to secure the egg to the egg mount. Because of natural variations in egg length, teams will be allowed to secure the egg at it's center in a space equal to the width of the provided tape, leaving approximately 2 cm of the front and rear of the egg visible to the judges.

(see diagram below regarding Rule 3.c and 3.d.)

Description:
This is a building event.  Teams will build ahead of time a mechanical vehicle capable of traveling down a straight, level track (whose distance will not be known until the time of the competition) while carrying an egg mounted to the front. A braking mechanism must self-activate to stop the device before it reaches a barrier at the end of the track.  Teams will be allowed 10 minutes to attempt 2 runs. THIS IS AN IMPOUND EVENT.

Materials:
Teams MUST bring their device and all tools required to calibrate/operate the device. Teams MUST bring Safety Spectacles/goggles with side shields.

Event Leaders will provide all tools necessary to impound/measure the devices, materials required to test the devices, and the scoresheet.

Scoring:
Teams are scored by the single run (out of 2 possible) that gives them the best overall place. This is a tiered event. Low score wins, starting in Tier 1. All 2nd tier devices will be ranked below all 1st tier devices. All 3rd tier devices will be ranked below all 2nd tier devices. The Official Scoresheet with more detailed information is available at the top of this page.

Common Mistakes:

  • Make sure the device is capable of starting with the tip of the egg even with the starting line when in the ready to launch configuration.
  • Many teams did not have a proper backstop/egg platform last year. This (or any construction violation) automatically drops a team into the 3rd tier. This is easily avoidable just by following the parameters given in the rules.
  • The Egg Mount description has been clarified above, see also the diagram below.

Recommendations:

  • Be extremely careful to follow all building requirements! Make sure you meet size/weight/material requirements when building. This will ensure a spot in the top 2 tiers. This is something that is easy to do ahead of time, yet every year there are multiple violations.
