Who was Julian Brown? Biography
Julian David Brown was born on June 16, 1990, in Fairfield, California. From the age of 3, he lived in Charlotte, North Carolina, attending Amay James Montessori, the French Immersion Programs at Reid Park International Academy and Smith Academy of International Languages, and the International Baccalaureate Program at Myers Park High School.
On April 18, 2004, as he traveled on a tour bus to the Charles De Gaulle Airport in Paris with 17 other North Carolina Olympic Development Team members, the bus overturned and Julian was fatally injured. The team had just completed an international soccer tournament in Nantes, France where Julian had played
left defender in every minute of every game. His defensive unit did not allow a single goal to be scored in any of the eight games they played while in France.
Scholarship
Julian’s passion for life and devotion to doing his best allowed him to succeed at everything he attempted, including skipping the second grade. Choosing the most challenging courses, Julian excelled in mathematics, language and science. He spoke French fluently and was taking Spanish as a third language. He participated in Regional Science Olympiad Tournaments, winning several gold and silver medals, while tackling some of the most difficult events. In his freshman year at Myers Park High School, he was an Honor Roll student while assuming an ambitious course load as well as a heavy soccer schedule.
Athleticism
After the school day was over and the cleats were on, Julian transformed into a gifted athlete. He began playing soccer at the Harris YMCA at the age of 3 and continued playing until he reached Premier level. Julian played for the South Charlotte Soccer Association, the Charlotte United Futbol Club and the junior varsity team at Myers Park High School. He played for the all-star North Carolina Olympic Development Team and had just begun to train with the U-15 Charlotte Soccer Club Super Y Team. He was a versatile player, performing well as left forward, left midfielder, center midfielder, right midfielder, and left defender.
Character
Julian was known as a person of exceptional character. Friends, teachers, coaches and his parents all speak of
his kindness, generosity, unassuming demeanor, and “1,000-watt smile”, a source of delight for everyone he met. One of his teachers reports, “He was always a gentleman in and out of class with his impeccable manners and courtesy.”
All who knew him say that his personality and charisma could make anyone smile. He had a certain “joie de vivre”. He smiled incessantly, radiating his happiness.
He was never angry or moody. He could always find something good in every situation. He always remained focused, even when he was badly fouled in a game. A longtime teammate declares, “I never once saw him lose his temper.”
