First in Flight
Division: A- Elementary School
NC Standard Course of Study Alignment: Grades 3-5 Science: General
Event Rules: First in Flight
Scoresheet: 2010 First in Flight Scoresheet

Description: Teams will build ahead of time up to two glider planes designed for maximum time aloft.

Materials:Teams MUST bring safety glasses, their glider, and any tools needed to adjust it.

Event leaders will provide stopwatches, measuring apparatus, and the official scoresheet.

Scoring: Ranking will be determined by summing the longest distance for any flight AND the longest time aloft for any flight. Put in other words, the event leader takes the longest distance recorded and adds this to the longest time aloft to get a Final Score. Ties will be broken by summing the next longest distance and time aloft recorded for tied teams.

Common Mistakes:

  • The materials allowed are clearly outlined in the rules. be careful not to use anything not allowed!

Recommendations:

  • Keep a log that outlines what adjustments you make for each test flight, and how that affected the time aloft.
