2007 NCSO Elementary Event Descriptions
  • Mary, Mary How Does Your Garden Grow? - Students study the impact of different growing conditions on plants.
  • A is for Anatomy - Students will answer multiple choice questions located at stations around the room. They will be questioned on anatomical structures of the nervous and digestive systems, and digestive processes and enzymes.
  • Wildlife Safari - Students will demonstrate their ability to identify various North Carolina wildlife and their habitats through the use of posters, charts or field guides . They will also be asked to demonstrate their understanding of basic ecological concepts such as food chains, food webs, and the impact of humans on the ecology of North Carolina.
  • Simple Machines - Participants will identify, use, and answer questions about simple machines.
  • Circuit Wizadry - Each team will test their knowledge of simple direct-current electric circuits, the difference between open and closed circuits and the difference between series and parallel circuits. 
  • Weather or Not - Students will be asked to identify and answer questions related to weather and meteorology.
  • Rock Hound - Students will prepare charts, identify various rocks and minerals, and describe their characteristics.
  • Science Jeopardy - The nature of the game is to choose a category and a level of difficulty from the game board and view and listen to an answer to a question. The first team to respond with an appropriate question for the anwer will be awarded the specified number of points and will choose the next topic and level.
  • Grasp a Graph - The objective is to develop the skills of collecting and organizing information using pictographs, bar, line and pie graphs to solve problems.
  • Name the Scientist - Students will be required to identify prominent scientists and their contributions to their field.
  • Write It, Do It - This event tests a competitor's ability to communicate with a colleague. 
  • Water Rocket - Students will build and launch a 2-liter plastic bottle for maximum time aloft.
  • Mystery Architecture - Students will be given a bag of materials, and be asked to build a tower as high as they can.  They will not know what materials will be in the bag before they receive it at the competition. The tower must support a tennis ball at the top.
  • Mission Possible - Participants will design, build, and test a Rube Goldberg-like Device, which incorporates up to 20 unique Action Transfers, and uses up to five Forms of Energy in a ccomplishing a given task in two (2) minutes. The task wil be identical for each team. Devices will be constructed prior to the competition.. 
  • Treasure Hunt - Students will demonstrate knowledge of compass use and use of a compass to locate a hidden treasure.
