NC Science Olympiad
Scoring Policy for Science Olympiad Tournaments
The following scoring method is used at Regional and State Tournaements in North Carolina:
Quite simply, the method of scoring used in North Carolina is to add the "rank" for each event (23 events) to get a total score for the team.

Let's say, "N" is the number of teams participating at your tournament that day. There is a separate number of teams for the Varsity heat and the JV heat. Each school has only one Varsity team; however schools may have zero, one or more Junior Varsity teams. Varsity and Junior Varsity teams are scored separately (but compete together). Now here is the simple scoring process for each event:

  1. All teams registered for the tournament will be placed in each event.
  2. Teams that violate a safety requirement in the rules will be DISQUALIFIED (DQ). If a team is DISQUALIFIED (DQ), the team will receive N + 2 points for the event.
  3. Teams that do not show up for an event will receive a NO SHOW (NS), that team will be awarded a score of N + 1.
  4. Any kind of cheating or poor sportsmanship will be regarded as POOR SPORTSMANSHIP (PS), that team will be awarded a score of N+6.  Again the "+6" is the penalty for this conduct.  If the incident is judged serious enough, the school could be disqualified from the tournament.  The judgment of this is left to the discretion of the tournament director.

If a Tie Occurs
Event Leaders are trained to have many tiebreaker questions to keep ties from occurring. However, in some cases a tie occurs and a team recieves an equivilant number of points for their placement in an event, a tie requires that all teams involved share the points that would have been assigned to all the teams involved. For example, let's say there are 10 teams in an event and a three-way tie occurs for 3rd place the following will take place: (3rd place + 4th place + 5th place) / 3 teams tied = 4.0 points per team. Each team would receive 4 points in this case.

If a tie occurs in overall scoring so that two or more teams have the same overall raw score. The first tiebreaker will be the number of Gold Medals, the second tiebreaker will be the number of Silver Medals, and the third tiebreaker will be the number Bronze Medals.

NOTE: Schools with JV teams will be provided a score sheet to show how their JV team did compared to their varsity team.

Please note that the scores from Regional and State Tournaments in North Carolina are not official until 5:00 pm Wednesday following the weekend of the tournament. This is needed for potential arbitration or scoring errors.
