Not required, but each team may bring one magnifying glass, the Science Olympiad Official Fossil List and one standard 3-inch or smaller 3-ring binder containing information in any form and from any source attached using the available rings. If the event features a rotation through a series of laboratory stations where the participants interact with samples, specimens, or displays; no material may be removed from the binder.
This event is typically done as either stations or as a sit down test, where all the stations have been copied into a test book. Teams will answer questions and be presented with information in the form of pictures, graphs, charts, written descriptions, etc. which they will the be asked to use science process skills to analyze (make calculations, make hypotheses and predictions, create graphs or charts, etc). Teams use fossils to date and correlate rock units as well as demonstrate their knowledge of ancient life by completing tasks related to fossil identification and classification.
High score wins. Questions will have pre-assigned point values. Predetermined questions will be used to break ties.
